Eighteen was a brand created for my final major project at University. It was centred around child labour and how, unfortunately, it is still being used today.
Children ask why, that's how they learn, sometimes it's very obvious questions but when a child asks you a question you don't know the answer to, it's frightening. You realise they are intuitive too and parents hearing "why do kids work in sweatshops?" will give them chills
The idea for the imagery came from the perspective of a child talking directly to a parent, asking them why and expecting an answer. With the children looking straight into the lens, It give the feeling of a one on one conversation.
Black and white helps to build a more somber and serious tone and the big type helps to emphasise the harshness of the questions.
In videos and on the website I chose to use a static CRT style transition. When it came to putting this project in our end of year exhibition, I had any video playing on a CRT screen, the reason being that a CRT TV is a thing of the past, the way child labour should be and unfortunately, they are used the same way these children are, which needs to change.
